2/M Aldin Turija (JBLFMU Arevalo) wins the 2nd Best Paper Award for Education and Educational Innovation during the 3rd UMRCI

A BSMT Professional Education Faculty of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc., 2/M Aldin Turija, won the 2nd Best Paper Award for Education and Educational Innovation during the 3rd UNIFFIED Multidisciplinary Research Conference International (UMRCI) given during the Awards and Gala Night of the UNIFFIED International Summit Iloilo City held last July 25, 2023, at Smallville 21 Hotel, Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

His paper entitled “The Use of Moodle and Students’ Performance in Protection of Marine Environment” ranked 2nd among the 24 papers coming from various respected universities and institutions. His paper was also presented in Parallel Session 4 of the event last July 24, 2023, at JBLFMU (Molo), Inc.

2/M Turija is a Maritime Instructor at JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc. under the Maritime Program where he is also assigned as a Simulator Assessor. He was a former seafarer who ventured into teaching in 2016.

The research conference is part of the 3-day activity of the UNIFFIED International held in the city of Iloilo. Other activities include Salindunong (transfer of knowledge to Filipino educators), awards and gala night and an educational tour. UNIFFIED, which stands for United Federation of Fil-Am Educators, is a SEC- registered non-profit organization of educators in the USA and the Philippines. It aims to unite educators who share the vision of dedicating skills in promoting excellence in teaching and providing community service through projects that will benefit the community.

D/C Franzesca Mari B. Bautista represented John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University at the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) Student Forum, which was held in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Headquarters at London, UK, from July 11-13, 2023.

Bautista, a fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Maritime Transportation student, was one of the 48 participants of the 2-day workshop and 1-day technical tour. With the theme “MARPOL at 50 – Our commitment goes on (World Maritime Theme 2023),” the workshop highlighted the Sustainability of Maritime Education and Training (MET) in Digital Era, Greener Shipping, Gender Equality and Diversity, Working and Living Conditions at Sea, and Marine Resources Protection. The said forum was organized by IAMU in partnership with IMO and was sponsored by the Nippon Foundation. It is a prestigious event that brings together students from different maritime universities worldwide to allow them to collaborate with world-leading researchers, educators, and experts from the maritime industry.

The IMO Secretary General, Kitack Lim, led the opening ceremony and highlighted the importance of the youth for the future of the industry. Meanwhile, IAMU Chair Adam Weintrit emphasized the importance of the solutions to be discussed with the end users themselves — the seafarers.

On the last day, the students were able to take a technical tour of Maritime Greenwich, a historic maritime district in the UK designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Supported by high-ranking officials from JBLFMU and mentored by the esteemed Capt. Alfred G. Espinosa, Ph. D., JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc.’s Administrator and Dr. Brian Gil S. Sarinas, JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc.’s Research Coordinator, Bautista was able to present proposed solutions to underlying issues for her chosen topic MET in the digital era.

JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc. Participates in the 30th PSERE Annual Conference 2023

The Philippine Society for Educational Research and Evaluation (PSERE), Inc. held its 30th Annual Conference at the Librada Avelino Auditorium, Centro Escolar University, Mendiola, Manila last May 29-31, 2023.

John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc. campus sent participants to the said event. Second Mate Loren Steve G. Glumalid, a BSMT Faculty, presented a research titled Faculty and Students’ Feedback on the Use of JeL and the Academic Performance of Students in Deckwatch 1 (Collision Regulation), and emerged as a Champion among the best paper presenters.

Only one award was given throughout the two-day conference, and JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc. turned out to be the over-all winner among all presenters.

The paper titled Status of Students’ Mental Health during Pandemic: Basis for the Development of Student Enhancement Program was given through a poster presentation by 2/M Karl Danielle H. Sira with his co-authors Dr. Brian Gil S. Sarinas, and Rohena Z. Miranda, M.A. Ed., RGC.

Also present in the event were Engr. Roderick R. Germo, Ph.D., a BSMT Faculty member who received the award as Associate Research Fellow (ARF) and Dr. Geneva M. Eler, Dean of the JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc. Graduate School who received the award as Research Fellow (RF).

42nd Thailand TESOL International Conference

The 42nd Thailand TESOL International Conference addressed a wide range of timely themes regarding innovation, engagement, and resilience for TESOL communities concerning the digital era’s impact on English teaching and learning during this ever-changing disruptive sociocultural and educational contexts. The paper presentation experience during the two-day conference of TESOL Thailand last January 27-28, 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand has been a great opportunity for me to meet fellow educators and language enthusiasts all across the globe.

The conference commenced with the opening ceremony and Dr. Singhanat Nomnian president of the TESOL Thailand shared that there should be resilient ELT practices, processes and policies play significant roles to offer significant research for a better tomorrow. Meanwhile, the keynote speaker Dr. Phra Dhammavatjarabundit of Chulangkorn University, Thailand shared about English language teaching and learning in the future. Plenary talks of the invited plenary speakers were also shared about finding balance in the post-pandemic world, ideas for coping with stresses in today’s classroom, and enhancing teachers’ digital competence by focusing on the delivery of blended teacher education. Paper presenters like me were given an avenue to share our research with an audience and it was such a great experience having an exchange of ideas with fellow speakers of different cultures and beliefs to make difference in the world of language learning.

It was highlighted during the closing ceremonies that TESOL practitioners from a variety of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary fields to nourish insightful ELT ground-breaking research, pedagogies, materials, and innovations for current and future endeavors in local and global contexts. Existing challenges and new opportunities for teachers call for more innovative, engaging, and resilient ELT practices.

Patent Seminar at JBLFMU-Molo

The Research Department of JBLFMU-Molo conducted its First Training-Workshop on Patent Search and Patent Drafting last March 14-17, 2023, held at the Third Floor of the University Library. This seminar-workshop was attended by thirty (30) faculty and staff from JBLFMU-Molo and five (5) from JBLCF-Bacolod.

Mr. Robert O. Parcia, Administrator of JBLFMU-Molo, gave his welcome remarks. Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga, Regional Director of DOST-Region 6, was the Inspirational Speaker, and Dr. Armando R. Reosura, Director of Intellectual Property Management at Carlos Hilado Memorial State University, was the resource speaker. On the last day of the workshop, the participants presented their respective inventions and utility models.
