JBLFMU (Arevalo) Hosts Annual Faculty, Staff, and 13th Student Research Colloquium: A Celebration of Innovation and Excellence

A day of intellectual discovery, dynamic discussions, and groundbreaking research unfolded as JBLFMU (Arevalo) successfully hosted the Annual Faculty and Staff and 13th Student Research Colloquium on March 26, 2025, at JBL Hall. Under the theme “Innovating Maritime Education Through Research: Navigating the Future with Technology, Sustainability, and Excellence,” the event reaffirmed the university’s commitment to advancing maritime education through research-driven solutions.

Opening Ceremonies: Setting the Tone for Innovation

The event commenced with a solemn invocation, followed by the Philippine National Anthem, AVP, and the JBLFMU Hymn. This was followed by an essential Safety Protocol Briefing by 2M Karl Danielle H. Sira, MMM, CCSSM, Safety Officer, ensuring a safe and well-organized event.

In his Words of Welcome, Mr. Robert O. Parcia, MSMM, Administrator of JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc., emphasized the significance of research in navigating the future of maritime education. He highlighted the institution’s continuous efforts to enhance academic and professional excellence through research.

Following this, Dr. Brian Gil S. Sarinas, OIC-Director of JBLFMU Research and Development and Community Extension Services, delivered an Inspirational Message, encouraging faculty, staff, and students to remain committed to innovation and sustainability in maritime research. He stressed that technological advancements and a research-driven mindset are key to the maritime industry’s growth.

Dr. Bernardita S. Somosa, Faculty and Staff Research Committee, provided an insightful Introduction of Paper Reactors, setting the stage for engaging discussions and valuable feedback from esteemed reactors.

Morning Session: Faculty and Staff Research Presentations

The morning session kicked off with distinguished faculty and staff showcasing their latest research in maritime education, student engagement, and workforce preparedness. Highlights included:

Esteemed reactors Capt. Luis G. Evidente, Ph.D. and Dr. Nenita V. Quiñon provided valuable insights into the practical implications of these studies. Capt. Evidente, a Consultant for External Affairs and Member of the Board of Trustees of JBLFMU, emphasized the importance of aligning research findings with real-world applications to enhance maritime education and industry practices. Dr. Quiñon, a retired professor from the University of San Agustin, highlighted the critical role of research in addressing academic and professional challenges, encouraging researchers to pursue interdisciplinary studies for holistic solutions.

Dr. Roderick R. Germo, OIC Research Coordinator, commended the faculty members for their dedication to research and its significant role in maritime education. He emphasized that research is the foundation of continuous improvement and innovation in the maritime industry, ensuring the growth and sustainability of maritime institutions.

Spotlight on Sustainability: Sharing of Best Practices

A special segment on environmental sustainability followed, featuring 2/M Frank C. Lavega, JBLFMU’s Pollution Control Officer (PCO). He presented JBLFMU’s Environmental Day Celebration Initiatives, emphasizing innovative sustainability strategies and compliance with maritime environmental regulations. His talk inspired faculty, students, and industry professionals to integrate sustainable practices into their respective fields, reinforcing JBLFMU’s commitment to academic excellence and environmental responsibility.

Afternoon Session: 13th Student Research Colloquium – Empowering Future Maritime Leaders

The event started with Words of Welcome from C/M Virmari S. Tan, Ph.D., OIC-Director of JBLFMU International Relations Office and Dean of the BSMT Department, who emphasized the significance of maritime research in shaping future leaders.

Additionally, Dr. Ma. Elena J. Eleperia, Director of Academic Affairs, delivered an inspiring message on the role of academic research in fostering technological advancements and sustainability in maritime education.

A distinguished panel of judges, introduced by Dr. Mary Jean L. Dela Cruz, Faculty Assistant to the Dean, General Education, included Dr. Felipe Vista (NISU), Capt. Jorge Aborde (JBLFMU), and Dr. John Erwin Pedroso (WVSU). They provided expert evaluations and constructive feedback on the students’ research.

JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc. Successfully Hosts Research Colloquium, Sharing of Best Practices, and Innovation Exhibit

As part of the 77th Foundation Week Celebration, JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc. successfully convened the “Research Colloquium, Sharing of Best Practices, and Innovation Exhibit 2025” on February 6, 2025, at JBL Hall. Spearheaded by Engr. Roderick R. Germo, Ph.D., Unit Research Coordinator, the event showcased the institution’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence.

With the theme “Propelling Excellence Through Innovation and Collaboration,” the program commenced at 7:30 AM with registration, followed by an invocation, the Philippine National Anthem, and the JBLFMU Hymn performed by Coro Handumanan. Safety protocols were addressed by 2M Karl Danielle H. Sira, MMM, CCSSM, Safety Officer of JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc.

An engaging open forum, moderated by Dr. Rolando A. Alimen, Research Coordinator of JBLFMU (Molo), Inc., allowed participants to discuss and reflect on the presented studies.

  • Reactions to the best practices were provided by esteemed faculty from various JBLFMU campuses.

Innovation Exhibit

The event concluded with the ribbon-cutting ceremony and the opening of the Innovation Exhibit, led by JBLFMU CEO Dr. Ronald Raymond L. Sebastian, Capt. Luis G. Evidente, Dr. Ma. Elena J. Eleperia, and Dr. Brian Gil S. Sarinas. The exhibit showcased groundbreaking projects and innovations from different JBLFMU campuses, highlighting the institution’s forward-thinking approach to research and development.

JBLFMU-Arevalo Triumphs at ICDBSE 2024

Nonthaburi, Thailand – JBLFMU-Arevalo once again demonstrated its excellence on the global stage as 2/M Aldin L. Turija earned the Best Presentation Award at the 2nd International Conference of Digital Business, Society, and Economy (ICDBSE 2024) held at Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University, Nonthaburi, Thailand, on November 13-14, 2024.

Turija presented his paper, “Learning Management System for Protection of Marine Environment Course: User Feedback and Student’s Academic Performance,” which captivated both the audience and the panel of judges. His research examined the effectiveness of Learning Management Systems (LMS) in marine environmental protection courses, analyzing user feedback and student performance metrics. The study’s findings provide valuable insights into the enhancement of maritime education, particularly in promoting environmental awareness among future seafarers.

His outstanding presentation and innovative research earned him the prestigious Best Presentation Award, solidifying his role as a thought leader in maritime education and digital learning integration.

The recognition of Turija’s work at ICDBSE 2024 highlights JBLFMU-Arevalo’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation in maritime education. JBLFMU-Arevalo Shines at 2024 NOSTE International Research Conference

The 2024 NOSTE International Research Conference and Training Workshops, held at West Visayas State University (WVSU) in La Paz, Iloilo City from September 20-22, 2024, showcased groundbreaking research from experts across various fields. The event, a hub of academic excellence and innovative discussions, honored distinguished researchers for their contributions to scientific and practical knowledge.

Among the remarkable participants were 2/M Aldin L. Turija and 2/M Jester B. De la Cruz, who delivered outstanding presentations and earned prestigious awards for their research papers in the maritime industry.

Turija’s paper, “A Documentary Review of the Oil Spill Responses in Iloilo After the MT Solar 1 Incident,” provided an in-depth analysis of the measures taken to mitigate the devastating environmental effects of one of the country’s worst oil spills. His work was recognized with the Best Paper Award – 3rd Place, a testament to its significant impact on policy and environmental safety protocols.

Meanwhile, De la Cruz presented “The Extent of Application on Hard and Soft Skills Onboard Ship: Basis for Development of Program to Enhance Seafarers’ Skills,” an insightful study on the critical competencies needed in maritime operations. His research, which proposed practical strategies for enhancing the skills of seafarers, was awarded Best Paper Award – 2nd Place—a remarkable achievement that underscores the importance of continuous development in the maritime profession.

The recognition of these two outstanding presenters highlights the growing relevance of research in maritime education and environmental sustainability. Their achievements not only contribute to academic discourse but also provide valuable insights for industry stakeholders, policymakers, and future maritime professionals.

RCT ’24 highlights AI on maritime field; tackles part I & II of “Innovative Research and Creative Works”

In celebration of the recently achieved autonomous status of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (JBLFMU) from all of its units, a Research Capability Training (RCT) themed “Innovative Research and Creative Works” was conducted last September 30, at the JBL Hall of the Arevalo unit.

The one-day-event was opened by the Administrator of JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc., Mr. Robert O. Parcia, MSMM, with former research coordinator of the university, Dr. Melchor M. Magramo, current Research and Extension Director, made brief insights to research.

“Research should not be stable, research should be continuous,” according to Dr. Magramo.

Dr. Resurreccion B. Sadaba, Full Professor (Professor 12) of the University of the Philippines Visayas, opened his talks as a resource speaker of the event with a laud to the grant achieved by JBLFMU, as well as made his conversation pointed out on how AI (Artificial Intelligence) is used in the maritime field.

“I understand that John B. Lacson is evaluated according to the guidelines set by CHED, in the application towards autonomous status. I hope that this talk will provide you with some new inputs about innovative research,” the resource speaker highlighted before formally talking on the part one and two of his talks.

Part one introduced to present spectators such as the Graduate School and Community Extension Services (CES) faculty and staff due to write research, Senior High School students, Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) 2, and Bachelor of Science in Criminology (BS Crim) 4 students to the introduction of marine transportation and marine engineering, eco-friendly materials in ship construction, and AI and machine learning in maritime operations.

 

The part two concluded the event on the presentation of creative works in marine engineering and marine transportation, aesthetic and functional aspects of vessel design, and integration of art and technology.
