JBLFMU (Arevalo) Hosts Annual Faculty, Staff, and 13th Student Research Colloquium: A Celebration of Innovation and Excellence

A day of intellectual discovery, dynamic discussions, and groundbreaking research unfolded as JBLFMU (Arevalo) successfully hosted the Annual Faculty and Staff and 13th Student Research Colloquium on March 26, 2025, at JBL Hall. Under the theme “Innovating Maritime Education Through Research: Navigating the Future with Technology, Sustainability, and Excellence,” the event reaffirmed the university’s commitment to advancing maritime education through research-driven solutions.

Opening Ceremonies: Setting the Tone for Innovation

The event commenced with a solemn invocation, followed by the Philippine National Anthem, AVP, and the JBLFMU Hymn. This was followed by an essential Safety Protocol Briefing by 2M Karl Danielle H. Sira, MMM, CCSSM, Safety Officer, ensuring a safe and well-organized event.

In his Words of Welcome, Mr. Robert O. Parcia, MSMM, Administrator of JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc., emphasized the significance of research in navigating the future of maritime education. He highlighted the institution’s continuous efforts to enhance academic and professional excellence through research.

Following this, Dr. Brian Gil S. Sarinas, OIC-Director of JBLFMU Research and Development and Community Extension Services, delivered an Inspirational Message, encouraging faculty, staff, and students to remain committed to innovation and sustainability in maritime research. He stressed that technological advancements and a research-driven mindset are key to the maritime industry’s growth.

Dr. Bernardita S. Somosa, Faculty and Staff Research Committee, provided an insightful Introduction of Paper Reactors, setting the stage for engaging discussions and valuable feedback from esteemed reactors.

Morning Session: Faculty and Staff Research Presentations

The morning session kicked off with distinguished faculty and staff showcasing their latest research in maritime education, student engagement, and workforce preparedness. Highlights included:

Esteemed reactors Capt. Luis G. Evidente, Ph.D. and Dr. Nenita V. Quiñon provided valuable insights into the practical implications of these studies. Capt. Evidente, a Consultant for External Affairs and Member of the Board of Trustees of JBLFMU, emphasized the importance of aligning research findings with real-world applications to enhance maritime education and industry practices. Dr. Quiñon, a retired professor from the University of San Agustin, highlighted the critical role of research in addressing academic and professional challenges, encouraging researchers to pursue interdisciplinary studies for holistic solutions.

Dr. Roderick R. Germo, OIC Research Coordinator, commended the faculty members for their dedication to research and its significant role in maritime education. He emphasized that research is the foundation of continuous improvement and innovation in the maritime industry, ensuring the growth and sustainability of maritime institutions.

Spotlight on Sustainability: Sharing of Best Practices

A special segment on environmental sustainability followed, featuring 2/M Frank C. Lavega, JBLFMU’s Pollution Control Officer (PCO). He presented JBLFMU’s Environmental Day Celebration Initiatives, emphasizing innovative sustainability strategies and compliance with maritime environmental regulations. His talk inspired faculty, students, and industry professionals to integrate sustainable practices into their respective fields, reinforcing JBLFMU’s commitment to academic excellence and environmental responsibility.

Afternoon Session: 13th Student Research Colloquium – Empowering Future Maritime Leaders

The event started with Words of Welcome from C/M Virmari S. Tan, Ph.D., OIC-Director of JBLFMU International Relations Office and Dean of the BSMT Department, who emphasized the significance of maritime research in shaping future leaders.

Additionally, Dr. Ma. Elena J. Eleperia, Director of Academic Affairs, delivered an inspiring message on the role of academic research in fostering technological advancements and sustainability in maritime education.

A distinguished panel of judges, introduced by Dr. Mary Jean L. Dela Cruz, Faculty Assistant to the Dean, General Education, included Dr. Felipe Vista (NISU), Capt. Jorge Aborde (JBLFMU), and Dr. John Erwin Pedroso (WVSU). They provided expert evaluations and constructive feedback on the students’ research.

Sustainability, Innovation, Internationalization: Highlights from the 14th Unit Research Colloquium of JBLCF-Bacolod

JBLCF-Bacolod, March 12, 2025—It has been another year of astounding success, as JBLCF-Bacolod showcased its unwavering commitment to research excellence and innovation through the 14th Unit Research Colloquium, held at the New Audio-Visual Room, on the theme “Driving Research in a Technologically Evolving Landscape: Balancing Innovation, Sustainability, and Internationalization.”

The colloquium commenced with a series of messages by Dr. Sylvino Tupas (Administrator), Dr. Emeliza Estimo (Unit Research Coordinator), and Dr. Brian Gil Sarinas (OIC Director for Research and Development and Community Extension Services), and the inspiring keynote speech by Dr. Virmari Tan, OIC Director of JBLFMU’s International Relations Office, who emphasized the role of digital transformation in maritime education. This was followed by a plenary session graced by Capt. Enrico O. Santos of MARINA, who presented groundbreaking insights through his paper on accrediting electronic training record books (E-TRBs) for maritime training and education.

Parallel sessions highlighted diverse research topics from paper presentations of students and employees, covering areas such as artificial intelligence in education, mathematics, and science efficacy, workplace bullying, students’ health and wellness, workplace dynamics, and sustainability in maritime operations, among others. Poster presentations showcasing innovations developed by students were also displayed at the venue.

The event also featured a sharing of best practices by Mrs. Michelle Jean Villanueva (Head of the Human Resource Department) and Dr. Violeta Neri (Dean of the College of Business and Education). These presentations reinforced JBLFMU’s mission to balance innovation with sustainability while ensuring that stakeholders’ expectations are met—one of the best practices of JBLCF-Bacolod, which the Academic Director, Dr. Ma. Elena Eleperia, has recognized.

The program concluded with the awarding of certificates to presenters and judges, the winners of the Best Paper Presentation, and the winners of the Poster Presentation and Exhibits.

The resounding success of the 14th Unit Research Colloquium would not have been possible without the tireless efforts and exemplary leadership of the Unit Research Committee, headed by Dr. Emeliza T. Estimo, Research Coordinator of JBLCF-Bacolod. Under her guidance, the committee meticulously planned and executed every aspect of the event, ensuring a smooth flow and execution of the program. Special thanks to Mrs. Joanna S. Gudio, Student Research Coordinator, for overseeing the participation of students from the College of Maritime Education; Ms. Darlene D. Sabandal for students in the College of Business and Education, and Ms. Edgie C. Lumaud for students from the Basic Education Department.

JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc. Successfully Hosts Research Colloquium, Sharing of Best Practices, and Innovation Exhibit

As part of the 77th Foundation Week Celebration, JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc. successfully convened the “Research Colloquium, Sharing of Best Practices, and Innovation Exhibit 2025” on February 6, 2025, at JBL Hall. Spearheaded by Engr. Roderick R. Germo, Ph.D., Unit Research Coordinator, the event showcased the institution’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence.

With the theme “Propelling Excellence Through Innovation and Collaboration,” the program commenced at 7:30 AM with registration, followed by an invocation, the Philippine National Anthem, and the JBLFMU Hymn performed by Coro Handumanan. Safety protocols were addressed by 2M Karl Danielle H. Sira, MMM, CCSSM, Safety Officer of JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc.

The event concluded with the ribbon-cutting ceremony and the opening of the Innovation Exhibit, led by JBLFMU CEO Dr. Ronald Raymond L. Sebastian, Capt. Luis G. Evidente, Dr. Ma. Elena J. Eleperia, and Dr. Brian Gil S. Sarinas. The exhibit showcased groundbreaking projects and innovations from different JBLFMU campuses, highlighting the institution’s forward-thinking approach to research and development.

The Research Colloquium, Sharing of Best Practices, and Innovation Exhibit 2025 successfully provided a platform for intellectual exchange, collaboration, and the promotion of excellence in research and innovation. 2024 JBLFMU Research Colloquium Highlights Innovation and Best Practices, JBLCF-Bacolod as Host

In a showcase of maritime innovation and research excellence, the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (JBLFMU) recently held the 2024 Research Colloquium and Sharing of Best Practices with JBLCF-Bacolod as the host unit. This event was participated by the different units of the university, bringing together industry experts, academics, and students to discuss key issues and share best practices.

The event kicked off with the arrival and registration of participants, followed by an invocation and the rendition of the Philippine National Anthem and the JBLFMU Hymn. Mrs. Mary Anne Pasco, the Safety Officer, delivered a safety orientation to ensure a secure environment for all attendees.

Engr. Roberto Neal S. Sobrejuanite, Administrator of JBLCF (Bacolod), Inc., extended words of welcome to the participants, setting the tone for the symposium. Dr. Ronald Raymond L. Sebastian, Chief Executive Officer of JBLFMU, delivered a message emphasizing the importance of research and development in advancing the maritime sector.

Dr. Melchor M. Magramo, Director of Research & Extension, provided the rationale behind the symposium, highlighting its significance in driving innovation and addressing industry challenges. Dr. Brian Gil S. Sarinas, Research Coordinator of JBLFMU (Arevalo), Inc., then introduced the keynote speaker, Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga, CESO II, Regional Director and WVCIEERD Co-Chair of DOST Regional Office VI. Engr. Gelonga delivered a keynote speech, focusing on the role of research and innovation in shaping the future of the maritime industry.

Engr. Sobrejuanite led the awarding of a Certificate of Appreciation to Engr. Gelonga, acknowledging his valuable contribution to the symposium. Dr. Rolando A. Alimen, Research Coordinator of JBLFMU (Molo), Inc., then laid out the house rules and guidelines for the paper presentation session. The session featured three papers presented by esteemed industry professionals:

  1. “Modernization of Domestic Fleet in Western Visayas: Basis for Safety and Service Enhancement Program” by Engr. Rufina A. Aquino, Ph.D.
  2. “Seafarer’s Engagement, Work Attitude, and Work Performance: Bases for Retention Program” by Dr. Emmanuel B. Carpio
  3. “Life skills, Technological Awareness, and Attitude of Maritime Students toward Emerging Technologies: Basis for a Proposed Academic Intervention Program” by Capt. Luis G. Evidente, Ph.D.

 

After the paper presentations, a ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the opening of exhibits showcasing innovative projects and research initiatives of the academic units of the university. Dr. Sebastian and Dr. Magramo, along with the Unit Administrators, Research Coordinators, and Executive Council Officers, led the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Following a lunch break, the symposium resumed with a session on sharing best practices, featuring presentations on various topics including physical activity towards health and fitness, legacy fitness programs, and the utilization of Google Workspace in monitoring and updating students’ onboard training.

The event concluded with the announcement and awarding of winners of the JBLFMU-RDC Digital Logo Making Contest, followed by closing remarks from Dr. Emeliza T. Estimo, Research Coordinator of the host unit, JBLCF (Bacolod), Inc.

A photo opportunity was provided for all participants, marking the end of a successful symposium aimed at promoting innovation and collaboration in the maritime industry.

This Unit Research Colloquium and Sharing of Best Innovative Practices exemplified the institution’s vibrant culture of inquiry, innovation, and progress. JBLCF-Bacolod continues to push the boundaries of academia, nurturing an environment where research, knowledge, and innovation intersect to shape a brighter future.

The event took a leap under the leadership of Dr. Emeliza T. Estimo, Research Coordinator of JBLCF-Bacolod, and was graced by the presence of the JBLFMU Director for Research and Extension, Dr. Melchor M. Magramo; the Executive Assistant to the CEO, Capt. Luis G. Evidente; the Director for Academic Affairs, Dr. Elena Eleperia; and the Administrator of JBLCF-Bacolod, Engr. Roberto Neal S. Sobrejuanite. Gratitude and due recognition are also expressed for the men and women in Yellow, the members of the JBLCF-Bacolod Research Committee.
