The 2024 NOSTE International Research Conference and Training Workshops, held at West Visayas State University (WVSU) in La Paz, Iloilo City from September 20-22, 2024, showcased groundbreaking research from experts across various fields. The event, a hub of academic excellence and innovative discussions, honored distinguished researchers for their contributions to scientific and practical knowledge.
Among the remarkable participants were 2/M Aldin L. Turija and 2/M Jester B. De la Cruz, who delivered outstanding presentations and earned prestigious awards for their research papers in the maritime industry.
Turija’s paper, “A Documentary Review of the Oil Spill Responses in Iloilo After the MT Solar 1 Incident,” provided an in-depth analysis of the measures taken to mitigate the devastating environmental effects of one of the country’s worst oil spills. His work was recognized with the Best Paper Award – 3rd Place, a testament to its significant impact on policy and environmental safety protocols.

Meanwhile, De la Cruz presented “The Extent of Application on Hard and Soft Skills Onboard Ship: Basis for Development of Program to Enhance Seafarers’ Skills,” an insightful study on the critical competencies needed in maritime operations. His research, which proposed practical strategies for enhancing the skills of seafarers, was awarded Best Paper Award – 2nd Place—a remarkable achievement that underscores the importance of continuous development in the maritime profession.
