Unit Research Colloquium ‘22 features ‘adaptive and responsive’ studies

This year’s Unit Research Colloquium and Utilization Workshop highlighted studies that are responsive to the needs of the time and adaptive to the change of times. The said affirmation came from the paper reactors during the colloquium conducted last September 23, 2022, as stated by Dr. Brian Gil S. Sarinas, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (Arevalo), Inc. Research Coordinator. He indicated further that there is certainly a need to produce high-caliber outputs in the landscape of the new normal, worthy of research expert’s recognition, and relevant to the educational context we are experiencing today.

The studies presented were: Faculty and Students’ Feedback on the Use of JeL and the Academic Performance of Students in Navigation 1 (Navigation Instruments with Compasses) by C/M Kristoffer G. Pulmones; Faculty and Students’ Feedback on the Use of JeL and the Academic Performance of Students in Nav 3 (Terrestrial and Coastal Navigation 2) by 2/M Nicolas M. Tuares; JBLFMU Core Values: Application and Life Inculcation Among Students, Faculty, and Staff by Ms. Richen Mae M. Taba; Health-related Problems among Seafarers in a Shipping Company by 2/M Renan G. Mojo; and COVID-19 Protocol: Level of Implementation and Opportunities for Improvement in a Maritime University by 2/M Frank Adrian C. Lavega.

Moreover, Dr. Aurora Fe C. Bautista, a retired professor of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), and Dr. Nenita V. Quiñon, a retired professor of the University of San Agustin (USA) served as the paper reactors.

“It was a worthwhile and challenging experience for me when I presented my study. This is my fair share to my Lacsonian community, especially the students, in improving their academic performance,” said 2/M Tuares. The outputs after the paper presentation and critiquing showcasing faculty studies last school year 2021-2022 will be published in the Institutional Research Journal.

JBLCF-BACOLOD RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER HOLDS 2021-2022 VIRTUAL RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM

Written by Rengil V. Mana-ay

Lacsonian researchers shine in the 2021-2022 JBLCF-B Virtual Research Colloquium and Sharing of Innovative Practices as they showcase their talent and skills in the field of Research and Development, March 15 via Zoom.

With the theme “Realigning Institutional Priorities, Research, and Innovative Practices in Coping with the Pandemic,” the school’s Research and Development Center led the event to strengthen the research culture among students and faculty as a commitment to JBLFC-B’s Mission and Ten Point Agenda.

When COVID-19 became a pandemic in 2020, JBLCF-Bacolod, like other educational institutions, was compelled to put a high premium on innovation as a radical solution to adapt to change. To sustain its delivery of quality education and training, various departments have come up with adaptive measures to cope with the shift from F2F to online mode of delivery despite the challenges brought about by the pandemic.

This year, three innovative practices from different departments were shared in the event, namely: “Innovative Remote Transactions: Academics and Guidance Services Made Possible” by Dr. Eva M. Hilay, Principal of Basic Education Department; “The Accounting Solution: Innovating Amidst Financial Struggles Brought by COVID” by Reinand Y. Ramirez, Head of Finance Department; and “SAS Innovates: Sharing of Innovative Practices of the Student Affairs and Services Department” by Trina Grace L. Pahilanag, Guidance Paraprofessional of Student Affairs and Services Department.

Furthermore, two featured, and three competing papers were presented where John Eric E. Pangantihon, Alumnus of the Basic Education Department, and Alyn G. Libertad, Faculty of College of Maritime Education, won as Best Paper Presenter Award in Student Category and Faculty Category, respectively.

Students’ creativity was also highlighted in the Logo Design Contest and Digital Poster Making Contest. Vince Dave Duquilla of BSMT-PB (1) won 1st place in Logo Design Contest, and Antonion Ricardo Nobleza of BSHM 1-Alpha dominated the Digital Poster Making Contest.

Moreover, Dr. Raul C. Alvarez, Jr., Director IV of CHED Regional Office VI, graced the event together with the school department heads led by Engr. Roberto Neal Sobrejuanite, JBLCF-B Administrator.

“If we are going to change policies, if we are going to change things, we need Research. Research is change,” said Dr. Alvarez.

JBLCF-B Research and Development Center, headed by Research Coordinator Dr. Emeliza Estimo, expressed gratitude to everyone who made the event successful.

The Unit Research Colloquium started as a tradition in all academic campuses of JBLFMU in 2010. This event has eventually been adapted as an avenue for the presentation of research studies conducted by the faculty, administrative staff, and students, and the for dissemination of findings and recommendations for research utilization—all to enhance instruction and improve the delivery of quality services to satisfy the stakeholders’ expectations better. The following years after its birth, the Unit Research Colloquium became a whole-day event that included the Sharing of Best Practices; hence, the activity was later called Unit Research Colloquium and Sharing of Best Practices.
