The annual System Research Colloquium and Sharing of Best Practices were hosted this year by JBLCF Bacolod and was one of the highlights of the 73rd Foundation Anniversary of JBLFMU held last January 24, 2019. This event was spearheaded by the Dr. Emeliza T. Estimo, Research Coordinator of the unit, together with her research committees. It strengthens the research culture and enthusiasm among Lacsonian communities as it features new innovative ideas, knowledge and best practices every year. This prestigious event convened the administrators, department heads, selected faculty and staff and students from the three units namely JBLFMU – Molo, JBLFMU- Arevalo and JBLCF- Bacolod to provide opportunity for notable studies to be presented and for research findings to be discussed and utilized by the JBLFMU unit concerned.
The event was graced by Mrs. Rufina A. Aquino, Supervising Maritime Industry Specialist of MARINA Region 6, who was invited as the keynote speaker and guest presenters from other maritime schools and shipping companies.
The Research Colloquium featured the presentation of three papers by invited guests from the JBLFMU Graduate School who, at the same time, represented their respective institutions. Dr. Roberto F. Escaro III, President of the Regency Polytechnic in Koronadal City presented his paper titled “Dimensions of Personality as Determinants of Work Performance of Seafarers in the Philippines.” Dr. Winnie P. Bandong, Marine Manager/DPA of the CD Ship Management and Marine Services Corporation talked about “The Diversity Management and Cultural Sensitivity, Aptitude of Filipino Seafarers: An Opportunity for Curricular Reforms,” while Capt. Dr. Leonito M. Mirande, General Manager/Director of IMS Philippine Maritime Corporation, Manila, presented his paper, “Crewing Policies and Procedures in Maritime manning Agencies- Implementation and Satisfaction among Seafarers: Springboard for a Comprehensive Retention Program.” These topics were timely as they focus on one of the trending concerns in the maritime industry nowadays—human resource and crewing management.
Carefully selected research studies written by faculty and department heads of the different units were also presented in the second set of paper presentations. 2/M Louie Lloyd G. Lamprea, Laboratory Trainer and Pollution Administration Control Officer of JBLFMU-Arevalo, talked about his paper, “Students’ Skills on the Use of Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS).” Mrs. Julie V. Palma, Faculty of the Basic Education Department of JBLCF-Bacolod, presented her paper, “Maritime Students’ Values and Personality Traits: Basis for the Guidance Program Enhancement,” while Dr. Angeli N. Sebastian, Dean of the College of Business and Program Head for BS Business Administration of JBLFMU-Molo talked about her paper, “JBLFMU- Molo Business Students Attributes.”
Captain Luis G. Evidente, the executive assistant to the Chief Executive Officer was invited as the reactor to the papers presented. He shared his commendations, insights and suggestions pertaining to the value or significance of the papers and what more can be done to improve them.
The second part of the activity was the sharing of best practices facilitated by Mr. Joemil G. Galve, Community Extension Serves officer of JBLCF- Bacolod. Each unit presented a paper and shared one of their best practices. Mrs. Jennefer N. Galaraga, Program Head for BS Customs Administration and Dr. Angeli N. Sebastian, Dean of the College of Business and Program Head for BS Business Administration of JBLFMU-Molo shared one of their best practices which focused on the “Enhancement Strategies for Customs Brokers Licensure Exam Results.” Mr. Robert O. Parcia, the Administrator of JBLCF-Bacolod talked about his unit’s environmental program through a collaborative paper titled “Development of an Integrated Environmental Management Program for JBLCF- Bacolod,” while Dr. Geneva M. Eler, Dean of the Graduate School of JBLFMU, talked about their project through their paper, “B.O.O.K. Project :The JBLFMU Experience.”
Over the years, endeavors in research such as the System Research Colloquium have helped in strengthening the research culture of the units. The faculty, staff and students have gradually embraced the value of research and the significance of their contribution when conducting a study for the development of the school and its community.
