JBLCF researchers bag awards at the National Conference on Maritime Education and Training
“Life Skills of Maritime Students in the Philippines:
Responding to the Realities of Seafaring”
Research writing is one thing; presenting it is another thing. But bagging an award for it is a big milestone for every researcher, very similar to having one’s paper published in a reputable journal. The research process never stops until the paper is presented and shared with a wider audience. So each time a paper from JBLCF-Bacolod is shared in a bigger forum outside of the school, it becomes a victory by the school and not by the researcher alone. Indeed, presenting a paper as you bear the name of your school is not an easy feat.
This kind of victory was achieved for us by Dr. Emeliza T. Estimo, our Unit Research Coordinator, and Dr. Araceli C. Doromal, Consultant for Academics and Accreditation, when they presented their papers at the National Research Conference on Maritime Education and Training hosted by the Lyceum International Maritime Academy on March 28 and 29, 2019 in Batangas City. The theme of the conference was “Strengthening Maritime Institutions and Professionals towards Organizational Learning and Innovation.”
According to Dr. Jake M. Laguador, Director of the Center for Research. Innovation and Data Management of LPU-Batangas, the conference serves as a great opportunity for the participants to bring ideas and solutions to the challenges that are faced by the Maritime Industry and the Maritime Institutions of the country. He added that MHEIs should strengthen their manpower to build the confidence, competence, and courage of their faculty members and should provide their students the chance to present the findings of their papers as part of their training to enhance their communication skills and acquire learning experiences from the outputs of other organizations.
A total of 48 papers by various maritime institutions in the Philippines were presented at the conference. The presentations were divided into different tracks categorized as Industry and Community-Based Research, Academe-Based Research (Student Development), Academe-Based Research (Training and Development), Community and Academe-Based Research, Shipboard Training and Student Preparedness, Maritime Faculty and Student Development, Maritime Student Discipline, Behavior and Habits, Cognitive Learning and Development, and Assessment and Performance.

Dr. Estimo’s paper titled “Addressing Industry Feedback for Continuous Improvement: A Process Model” which was co-authored by Mr. Robert O. Parcia (former Administrator of JBLCF-Bacolod) and Ms. Geneveve M. Aguilar (Researcher-Statistician) was selected as Best Conference Paper for the Academe Category). She was also chosen as the Best Research Presenter for Academe-Based Research). Furthermore, a Certificate of Active Research Involvement was awarded to John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation (Bacolod), Inc. by host institution.
It is with great honor to mention that Dr. Araceli C. Doromal was selected to be one of the Plenary Speakers of the conference for the paper titled “Life Skills of Maritime Students in the Philippines: Responding to the Realities of Seafaring.” This paper was the offshoot of the collaborative research project initiated by JBLCF in collaboration with three other maritime schools—Asian Institute of Maritime Studies, Holy Cross of Davao College, Inc., and Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas. One of the focal insights gained from the study is the importance of developing life skills, also known as survival skills, among maritime students. In training them as future officers, maritime schools are responsible to develop not just their knowledge and skills in the field but also the equally significant skills and capabilities such as leadership skills, interpersonal skills, resilience, adaptability and the like, that will help them acquire their full potential and reach the peak of their career, and the important role that they should perform as loyal, responsible, tough, and dedicated marine officers. Dr. Doromal’s presentation was corroborated by the insight emphasized by the other plenary speakers which was on the strengthening of interpersonal communication skills.

JBLCF BACOLOD HOSTS THE 2019 SYSTEM RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM AND SHARING OF BEST PRACTICES
The annual System Research Colloquium and Sharing of Best Practices were hosted this year by JBLCF Bacolod and was one of the highlights of the 73rd Foundation Anniversary of JBLFMU held last January 24, 2019. This event was spearheaded by the Dr. Emeliza T. Estimo, Research Coordinator of the unit, together with her research committees. It strengthens the research culture and enthusiasm among Lacsonian communities as it features new innovative ideas, knowledge and best practices every year. This prestigious event convened the administrators, department heads, selected faculty and staff and students from the three units namely JBLFMU – Molo, JBLFMU- Arevalo and JBLCF- Bacolod to provide opportunity for notable studies to be presented and for research findings to be discussed and utilized by the JBLFMU unit concerned.
The event was graced by Mrs. Rufina A. Aquino, Supervising Maritime Industry Specialist of MARINA Region 6, who was invited as the keynote speaker and guest presenters from other maritime schools and shipping companies.
The Research Colloquium featured the presentation of three papers by invited guests from the JBLFMU Graduate School who, at the same time, represented their respective institutions. Dr. Roberto F. Escaro III, President of the Regency Polytechnic in Koronadal City presented his paper titled “Dimensions of Personality as Determinants of Work Performance of Seafarers in the Philippines.” Dr. Winnie P. Bandong, Marine Manager/DPA of the CD Ship Management and Marine Services Corporation talked about “The Diversity Management and Cultural Sensitivity, Aptitude of Filipino Seafarers: An Opportunity for Curricular Reforms,” while Capt. Dr. Leonito M. Mirande, General Manager/Director of IMS Philippine Maritime Corporation, Manila, presented his paper, “Crewing Policies and Procedures in Maritime manning Agencies- Implementation and Satisfaction among Seafarers: Springboard for a Comprehensive Retention Program.” These topics were timely as they focus on one of the trending concerns in the maritime industry nowadays—human resource and crewing management.
Carefully selected research studies written by faculty and department heads of the different units were also presented in the second set of paper presentations. 2/M Louie Lloyd G. Lamprea, Laboratory Trainer and Pollution Administration Control Officer of JBLFMU-Arevalo, talked about his paper, “Students’ Skills on the Use of Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS).” Mrs. Julie V. Palma, Faculty of the Basic Education Department of JBLCF-Bacolod, presented her paper, “Maritime Students’ Values and Personality Traits: Basis for the Guidance Program Enhancement,” while Dr. Angeli N. Sebastian, Dean of the College of Business and Program Head for BS Business Administration of JBLFMU-Molo talked about her paper, “JBLFMU- Molo Business Students Attributes.”
Captain Luis G. Evidente, the executive assistant to the Chief Executive Officer was invited as the reactor to the papers presented. He shared his commendations, insights and suggestions pertaining to the value or significance of the papers and what more can be done to improve them.
The second part of the activity was the sharing of best practices facilitated by Mr. Joemil G. Galve, Community Extension Serves officer of JBLCF- Bacolod. Each unit presented a paper and shared one of their best practices. Mrs. Jennefer N. Galaraga, Program Head for BS Customs Administration and Dr. Angeli N. Sebastian, Dean of the College of Business and Program Head for BS Business Administration of JBLFMU-Molo shared one of their best practices which focused on the “Enhancement Strategies for Customs Brokers Licensure Exam Results.” Mr. Robert O. Parcia, the Administrator of JBLCF-Bacolod talked about his unit’s environmental program through a collaborative paper titled “Development of an Integrated Environmental Management Program for JBLCF- Bacolod,” while Dr. Geneva M. Eler, Dean of the Graduate School of JBLFMU, talked about their project through their paper, “B.O.O.K. Project :The JBLFMU Experience.”
Over the years, endeavors in research such as the System Research Colloquium have helped in strengthening the research culture of the units. The faculty, staff and students have gradually embraced the value of research and the significance of their contribution when conducting a study for the development of the school and its community.
STRENGTHENING COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE IN MARITIME EDUCATION AND TRAINING THROUGH RESEARCH AND UTILIZATION
The Unit Research Colloquium and Utilization Workshop conducted by the Research and Development Center of JBLCF–Bacolod provide opportunity for faculty and staff researchers to present their research output in a venue wherein their study can be critiqued for improvement as well as for findings of the studies be utilized. Last August 23 -24, 2018, these activities were held at the HMA Function Hall showcasing nine (9) papers for presentation. This two-day activity was carefully planned and successfully conducted through the leadership of Dr. Emeliza T. Estimo, Research Coordinator of the unit, and the working committees who actively worked hand in hand to prepare and ensure that the activity will run smoothly.
The keynote speaker on the first day of the event was Capt. Luis G. Evidente, Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer of JBLFMU and his message revolved on the theme of the event: “Stronger Commitment to Excellence in Maritime Education and Training through Research”; while Dr. Nenie M. Galedo, Education Supervisor 2 of the Commission of Higher Education Region 6 was invited to join the activity as representative of the commission and informed the participants about the need also to align the research studies of the academe with the thrusts and agenda of CHED in research.
To critique the individual papers presented for further improvement, the committee invited three research experts who acted as panel of reactors in the colloquium namely, Dr. Melchor M. Magramo, Director, Research & Extension, John B. Lacson Maritime University; Dr. Carmen C. Menes, Head for Research, Accreditation and Quality Management, La Consolacion College Bacolod; and Dr. Riza T. Manalo of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos.
The papers that were presented are as follows: “Simulation Competencies of BSMT 3 Students in Seamanship 5” by 2/M Hendrickson E. Dioko, Faculty-College of Maritime Education; “Engine Room Hazards, Unsafe Practices and Opportunities for Improvement” by 3/E Ronnie C. Montano, Subject Area Head, Engine-College of Maritime Education; “Measures to Enhance the Implementation of Security and Safety in JBLCF-Bacolod” by Mrs. Joanna S. Gudio, Subject Area Head for Social Sciences, Languages and Research, College of Maritime Education, “Students’ Engagement and Benefits of the Community Outreach Activities of the College of Business Education” by Dr. Violeta Neri, Faculty, College of Business; “Career Choice of Customs Administration and Hotel and Restaurant Management Students” by Mrs. Ana Juline C. Dangallo, Dean, College of Business; and “Addressing Stakeholders’ Feedback for Continuous Improvement: An Institutional Practice” by Mr. Robert O. Parcia, Administrator, JBLCF-Bacolod.
On the second day of the activity, three research studies conducted on the Integrated Environmental Management Program of JBLCF-Bacolod were also presented as part of the accomplishments of the program. Dr. Carmen Menes, Head of Research, Accreditation and Quality Management of La Consolacion College Bacolod was the keynote speaker who shared her insights on the theme: “Research Utilization: Learning and Making Institutional Decision through Research.” She also shared her expertise by giving her impressions and reactions on the strengths and weaknesses of the papers presented.
The authors and the titles of the study are as follows: Dr. Emeliza T. Estimo, Unit Research Coordinator, who presented her paper, “Integrated Environmental Management Program: Social Impact, Value Added Experience and Challenges,” Mr. Joemil G. Galve, Community Extension and Services Officer with his paper, “IEMP-Information Education Campaign Programs, Activities and Initiatives and their Influence on the Internal Stakeholders,” and Mrs. Ruby D. Causing, Faculty, College of Maritime Education with her paper, “Awareness and Status of Compliance with the IEMP Environmental Policies.”
The most important part of the two-day activity was the research utilization workshop wherein department heads and employees concerned were formed into groups to brainstorm and draft their action plan or solutions to address the findings and recommendations of the studies presented. The entire activity was very productive and rewarding to the participants believing that once again they have lived up to their commitment to contribute through their effort in research to achieve excellence in maritime education and training.
