JBLCF-Bacolod clinches 2021-2022 with two more national and international paper presentations

Two more paper presentations from JBLCF-Bacolod made it to the national and international levels for the school year 2021-2022. These are the papers authored by Mrs. Irene C. Mamon, a faculty member of the College of Maritime Education, and Dr. Elisa V. Garcia, Chief Librarian of JBLCF-Bacolod.

Mrs. Mamon’s paper entitled “Note-Taking Behaviors of Top-Performing Junior High School Students” was presented at the 7th International Conference on Multidisciplinary Research held on March 24-26, 2022, via Zoom. This qualitative study descr ibes the students’ practices and experiences in note-taking, which can provide information that can aid the administrators, teachers, and students in organizing classroom activities to promote productivity and self-regulated learning. In her paper, she writes, “I have envisioned myself championing and empowering my students in facilitating their own learning.  With many studies such as this, I hope everyone gets to appreciate the efforts of the teachers in putting things in order, in trusting that students perform their initiatives in participating in the processes of learning.”

The second paper, entitled “Information and Communication Technology Capability, Service Quality, and Client Satisfaction of Libraries in the Online Distance Learning during Pandemic,” was presented by Dr. Elisa V. Garcia, Chief Librarian of JBLCF-Bacolod, at the 29th PSERE Annual Conference held on May 19-20, 2022, also via Zoom. Dr. Garcia’s paper aims to determine the ICT capability, service quality, and client satisfaction of selected libraries of HEIs in Negros Occidental during the school year 2020-2021 as the foundation for the proposed enhancement program to improve the ICT capability, service quality, and client satisfaction. The paper proposes redesigning the libraries’ daily operation by integrating technology in its processes, acquiring recent and updated books, subscribing to electronic databases and e-books, building digital libraries with access to open access educational resources, and capability training of the library staff on automation and content management systems to automate the libraries and develop their digital libraries/repositories.

DR. ESTIMO OF JBLCF-BACOLOD IS BACK TO SERVE PSERE

Dr. Emeliza Estimo, the Research Coordinator of JBLCF-Bacolod, has been reelected as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Philippine Society for Education Research and Evaluation (PSERE), Inc. for which she had previously served from 2017 to 2021. She had been voted in during the 29th PSERE Annual Conference held on May 19-20, 2022, via Zoom.

Being an officer of a research organization outside the walls of John B is both an opportunity and a responsibility. While it establishes a strong linkage between the institution that you represent and the external community, it also demands your time and capability as you are compelled by the situation to perform beyond your routine and, sometimes, beyond your limits. It is a call to get out of your comfort zone and represent the school to the best that you can because you cannot afford to jeopardize what it stands for.

“Being an active member of the Board of Directors is a challenging experience as it entails another set of responsibilities apart from my current functions. This means going the extra mile, but I consider it as a good avenue for JBLCF-Bacolod and JBLFMU as a whole to establish active linkages with other research institutions and organizations who are members of the society at the national level,” Dr. Estimo said. “More than a responsibility, being an officer in prestigious research organizations like PSERE is an opportunity to serve for a greater cause, to be able to share whatever intellectual blessing you have as you work with others for a noble objective.”

JBLCF-BACOLOD RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER HOLDS 2021-2022 VIRTUAL RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM

Written by Rengil V. Mana-ay

Lacsonian researchers shine in the 2021-2022 JBLCF-B Virtual Research Colloquium and Sharing of Innovative Practices as they showcase their talent and skills in the field of Research and Development, March 15 via Zoom.

With the theme “Realigning Institutional Priorities, Research, and Innovative Practices in Coping with the Pandemic,” the school’s Research and Development Center led the event to strengthen the research culture among students and faculty as a commitment to JBLFC-B’s Mission and Ten Point Agenda.

When COVID-19 became a pandemic in 2020, JBLCF-Bacolod, like other educational institutions, was compelled to put a high premium on innovation as a radical solution to adapt to change. To sustain its delivery of quality education and training, various departments have come up with adaptive measures to cope with the shift from F2F to online mode of delivery despite the challenges brought about by the pandemic.

This year, three innovative practices from different departments were shared in the event, namely: “Innovative Remote Transactions: Academics and Guidance Services Made Possible” by Dr. Eva M. Hilay, Principal of Basic Education Department; “The Accounting Solution: Innovating Amidst Financial Struggles Brought by COVID” by Reinand Y. Ramirez, Head of Finance Department; and “SAS Innovates: Sharing of Innovative Practices of the Student Affairs and Services Department” by Trina Grace L. Pahilanag, Guidance Paraprofessional of Student Affairs and Services Department.

Furthermore, two featured, and three competing papers were presented where John Eric E. Pangantihon, Alumnus of the Basic Education Department, and Alyn G. Libertad, Faculty of College of Maritime Education, won as Best Paper Presenter Award in Student Category and Faculty Category, respectively.

Students’ creativity was also highlighted in the Logo Design Contest and Digital Poster Making Contest. Vince Dave Duquilla of BSMT-PB (1) won 1st place in Logo Design Contest, and Antonion Ricardo Nobleza of BSHM 1-Alpha dominated the Digital Poster Making Contest.

Moreover, Dr. Raul C. Alvarez, Jr., Director IV of CHED Regional Office VI, graced the event together with the school department heads led by Engr. Roberto Neal Sobrejuanite, JBLCF-B Administrator.

“If we are going to change policies, if we are going to change things, we need Research. Research is change,” said Dr. Alvarez.

JBLCF-B Research and Development Center, headed by Research Coordinator Dr. Emeliza Estimo, expressed gratitude to everyone who made the event successful.

The Unit Research Colloquium started as a tradition in all academic campuses of JBLFMU in 2010. This event has eventually been adapted as an avenue for the presentation of research studies conducted by the faculty, administrative staff, and students, and the for dissemination of findings and recommendations for research utilization—all to enhance instruction and improve the delivery of quality services to satisfy the stakeholders’ expectations better. The following years after its birth, the Unit Research Colloquium became a whole-day event that included the Sharing of Best Practices; hence, the activity was later called Unit Research Colloquium and Sharing of Best Practices.

John B-Bacolod hosts two virtual webinars for faculty and student researchers of the University

To further enhance the research capability of faculty members and students, the System Research Team had identified webinars for inclusion in the University Annual Operations Plan for Research for the school year 2021-2022 (Reference: AOP Strategic Objective 3- Improve the research capability and motivation of faculty, staff, and student researchers). First in the series are the webinars on (1) Reference Management Software & Utilizing Various Search Engines for Research and (2) Research Ethics: Establishing an Institutional Research Ethics Review Board and Ethical Considerations in Research, both hosted by JBLCF-Bacolod.

The webinar on Reference Management Software & Utilizing Various Search Engines for Research was held on October 18, 2021, 8:30-11:30 A.M., with Ms. Elisa V. Garcia, the Chief Librarian of JBLCF-Bacolod and an active researcher and member of the Unit Research Committee, as the Resource Speaker. This webinar aimed to familiarize the faculty and student researchers with how to manage their references in research writing and the proper way of citing and listing various types of sources. It also aimed to acquaint them with various search engines to source their references. This event was graced by the attendance of people from all the three academic units of JBLFMU, including the Graduate School.

The webinar on Research Ethics: Establishing an Institutional Research Ethics Review Board and Ethical Considerations, on the other hand, aimed to acquaint the JBLFMU Research Team and other research enthusiasts of the University with the process of establishing an Institutional Research Ethics Review Board, which is now one of the major requirements of CHED. On the part of the faculty and staff researchers, the webinar was organized to educate them about some ethical issues that should be considered in research writing. This event was held on November 12, 2021, 9:00-12:00 P.M. It was graced by Dr. Anabelle D. Magbanua, Director for Research Ethics Review Office of the University of St. La Salle, who shared her expertise and experience as the event’s Resource Speaker. Ninety-two regular participants and Department Heads from the three academic units of the University have joined this webinar.

Much appreciation is expressed for the united efforts of the Unit Research Coordinators, Dr. Brian Gil S. Sarinas of JBLFMU-Arevalo, Dr. Rolando A. Alimen of JBLFMU-Molo, and Dr. Emeliza T. Estimo of the host unit (JBLCF-Bacolod), under the leadership of Dr. Melchor M. Magramo, Research Director of the University, for the success of these activities.

College of Maritime Education Researchers of JBLCF-Bacolod Go International

November 2021 has been another productive year for JBLCF-Bacolod with the successful paper presentations of two of our active researchers in the College of Maritime Education.

Maritime Education Researchers of JBLCF-Bacolod Go International Solidarios Image

Dr. Joecil T. Solidarios, a Physical Education instructor, successfully presented her paper entitled, “Effect of Audio-Visual Instruction on Front Crawl Swimming Performance of First-Year BSMT Students” at the 21st Annual Conference of the South East Asian Association for Institutional Research (SEAAIR) on November 23-24, 2021. Due to travel restrictions brought about by the pandemic, this year’s SEAAIR conference was held virtually and was participated in by countries like Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The theme of the conference was “Diversity in Education.” Dr. Solidarios has consistently been an active researcher and member of the Unit Research Committee of JBLCF-Bacolod. In her statement, she said, I am grateful to Dr. Emeliza Estimo, my student participants, our PE instructors, Ms. Geneveve Aguilar, 2/M Eleno Sing, Engr. Roberto Neal Sobrejuanite and my husband Stephen Solidarios, for their support in making this research and presentation possible. All glory belongs to our dear Almighty God!”

Maritime Education Researchers of JBLCF-Bacolod Go International Libertad ImageAnother feat worthy of recognition is that by Ms. Alyn G. Libertad of the College of Maritime Education. Miss Libertad successfully presented her paper entitled “Online Learning: A 21st-Century Alternative Approach to Maritime Education” at the 3rd International Research Conference on Teach Education and Indigenous Peoples Education held on November 20-27 and December 4, 2021 and hosted by the Philippine Normal University. She brought home the bacon by winning the Best Research Presenter Award among more than 100 presenting researchers at the conference.

Dr. Solidarios and Miss Libertad have been instrumental in helping Bacolod meet one of our Research AOP targets for this school year. But more than that, it is the values that they had learned —the strengthened work values, the honed skills, the fears they had overcome, the fulfillment from having achieved something more for themselves and others, and the gratitude that comes from a grateful heart—that had made the experience something worth remembering.
